Bitcoin Can Now Help Fund A Rare Cancer Research

Of all the wonderful things Bitcoin can help people do, here’s yet another to add to the list.
Beginning on Monday, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (also known as the Meso Foundation) will be accepting bitcoin donations to help fund cancer research at curemeso.org/bitcoin.
“As more and more businesses are accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment, we decided it was important for us to do the same,” said Ms. Melinda Kotzian, chief executive officer of the Meso Foundation.
The not-for-profit focuses their attention on mesothelioma, a malignant tumor found on the lining of the lung, abdomen, or heart, and is known to be caused by exposure to asbestos.
Many who are diagnosed with the awful disease are given a year or less to live, and not surprisingly, it gives the disease the title of one of the most aggressive and deadly cancers now we can help them by giving to their research using Bitcoin .
According to the Meso Foundation, an estimated one-third of those who develop mesothelioma here in the United States were exposed while serving in the United States Navy or working in shipyards.
And with very few treatments and no cure available, research is ongoing to try and defeat this diseased that has taken the lives of so many.

10 Things Orwell Got Right

Yes, [we will not find a solution to political problems in cryptography,] but we can win a major battle in the arms race and gain a new territory of freedom for several years. Governments are good at cutting off the heads of a centrally controlled networks like Napster, but pure P2P networks like Gnutella and Tor seem to be holding their own. – Satoshi Nakamoto
Bitcoin at its very heart is political. Though Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, does seem to be something of a libertarian, how the politics of Bitcoin play out over the next few years is not clear at all. That being said, Bitcoin is a disruptive force that will bring great discomfort to the uber-wealthy and their bankers and politicians which will have only one consequence for the rest of us: greater freedom.
When I found this article earlier today, I felt it spoke very plainly about the ills of our political and financial systems, but for the need to bring some peaceful, persistent disruption. It’s often said that if you don’t give people and outlet, their outlet will be revolution. With Bitcoin, we just might get that revolution without the blood.
Enjoy the read.

George Orwell ranks among the most profound social critics of the modern era. Some of his quotations, more than a half a century old, show the depth of understanding an enlightened mind can have about the future.

1)  “In our age there is no such thing as ‘keeping out of politics.’ All issues are political issues, and politics itself is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred and schizophrenia.”
Though many in the modern age have the will to bury their head in the sand when it comes to political matters, nobody can only concern themselves with the proverbial pebble in their shoe. If one is successful in avoiding politics, at some point the effects of the political decisions they abstained from participating in will reach their front door. More often than not, by that time the person has already lost whatever whisper of a voice the government has allowed them.

2)  “All the war-propaganda, all the screaming and lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting.”
Examining the nightly news in the run up to almost any military intervention will find scores of talking heads crying for blood to flow in the streets of some city the name of which they just learned to pronounce. Once the bullets start flying, those that clamored for war will still be safely on set bringing you up-to-the-minute coverage of the carnage while their stock in Raytheon climbs.

3)  “War against a foreign country only happens when the moneyed classes think they are going to profit from it.”
It’s pretty self-explanatory and while it may be hard to swallow, it’s certainly true. All it takes is a quick look at who benefited from the recent wars waged by the United States to see Orwell’s quip take life.

4)  “The very concept of objective truth is fading out of the world. Lies will pass into history.”
My most prized books are a collection of history books from around the world. I have an Iraqi book that recounts the glory of Saddam Hussein’s victory over the United States in 1991. I have books from three different nations claiming that one of their citizens was the first to fly. As some of the most powerful nations in the world agree to let certain facts be “forgotten,” the trend will only get worse. History is written by the victor, and the victor will never be asked if he told the truth.

Compared to Japan, the United States is in the Dark Ages

Professional trading platform Kraken has announced it will open up operations in Japan sometime next month.
After Mt. Gox was shattered by a US$470 million heist, a vacuum was created in the Japanese Bitcoin market. One of Mt. Gox’s insiders, Jesse Powell, tried to help and restore the flailing giant after a hacking attack back in 2011. That is when he decided to found a competitor – Kraken.
In result of Mt. Gox’s collapse, the newly founded Kraken soon found itself as one of the top Bitcoin exchanges with its base surging 50 percent in two months. “The company accounts for about half of the virtual currency’s daily euro trading,” says Powell.
Kraken was also part of CoinTelegraph’s online exchange reviews, which you can read here.

Long way to Japan

Jesse Powell has over a decade long experience in the industry. His company Lewt, an equivalent of Amazon.com for virtual potions, runes etc, prospered even after the so-called real money trading and sale of in-games items were banned by many companies responsible for running big online multiplayer games.
“The whole game currency space was very interesting to me, which is how I was able to notice bitcoin,” Powell said. “It has all the benefits of these gaming currencies without that centralized point of weakness. I think it’s really the future.”
The United States’ law made it difficult for Kraken to launch and then to get custodial bank accounts to hold customer funds. Because of the guidance on virtual currencies issued by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, the launch of Kraken’s services was delayed for half a year. According to US law, the company had to limit their US services to only five states, so Powell decided to look for another market to introduce Kraken.
That is why he got accustomed with a Japanese law making his company one of the founding members of the Japan Authority of Digital Asset along with CoinPass and BitFlyer. Kraken’s founder observed that a lot of difficulties with opening new markets for Bitcoin businesses are a result of regulatory hurdles and uncertainty. After the struggle with the American law, Powell admitted:
“I was really surprised how open-minded Japanese politicians are. Compared to Japan, the United States is in the Dark Ages.”

Turning points

The partnership with Germany’s Fidor Bank AG (F5R) was one of the company’s breakthroughs. Powell comments on this fact:
“Euro trading of virtual currencies, including bitcoin, litecoin and dogecoin, accounts for about 95 percent of the company’s volume. The exchange also allows deposits and withdrawals in South Korean won.”
Powell also admits that the launch into a new region depends on finding a bank partner in this region as it requires not only a lot of hard work, but also involves a great sum of financial resources. Kraken acquired its own bank partner in Japan, whose name remains unknown, and is now ready to open up the service to Japanese traders.
